The most common critter to enter attics in many areas including where i work in florida is the rat. Look at photos of raccoon feces or squirrel feces or rat feces or mouse feces or bat feces. If you have raccoons you must be wary of the fact that there is a 90 chance of a litter of baby raccoons in the attic. You can also look at the animal tracks left in the dust in the attic.

There are two main species of rats in the us the roof rat and the norway rat. Check on almost any surface not covered by insulation and there should be a layer of dust with animal tracks.
